TIRTHANKARA SCULPTURES – ANAIMALAI

HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDS :

Jain sculptures of 9th-10th century CE on this hill include, among others, figures of Mahavira, Parsvanatha, Bahubali and Yakshi Ambika. Carved due to the efforts of Jain Monk Ajjanandhi, these sculptures had been plastered and painted. “Tamil”, “Grantha” and “Vatteluthu” inscriptions are found at the base of the sculptures. Some paintings also remain on these sculptures.
